Christmas Cacti

DSC01454.JPG

This piece of work is more than two years old and I came across it the other day when I was tidying up my workroom.  The design source was cacti but the Christmas colours make me think of poinsettias and ivy.  This is machine made, using solubles – first I made a grid on an organza background (two layers with bondaweb and glitter between) and machined the shapes in gold metallic thread.  Then I added the silk velvet shapes, which had bondaweb on the back to stabilise before I cut them out.  These were applied, another scrap of soluble (Romeo) placed on top and then machined down with the same gold thread.  On the photo below you can see the decorative border that I added at the edge of the square, before I soldered out different areas around the velvet shapes and around the complete piece.
