I found a dead butterfly on our windowsill – a Small White, of which there have been so many in our garden this year. I thought it would be nice to draw it from life rather than from a book, so placed it under a magnifying glass so I could see the colours. Seems it’s not particularly white at all – more a very pale sulphur yellow with grey streaks. I opened it up to draw the inside of the wings but it fell apart, so consulted a book for the open-winged version and ascertained that the females have two dark spots on the forewings and the male only one. I really like the delicate colour combinations – very subtle grey, pale lemon and chalky white.
